Another application of thermal imaging is to trace the route and/or
leaks in hot pipes set in walls and solid floors. Infrared cameras can
identify problem areas that can’t be seen with the naked eye or cannot
be easily reached by conventional damp meter testing (an atrium for
example). Leaks from underfloor heating or buried pipework are
extremely frustrating with water always following the path of least
resistance, therefore where it accumulates is not necessarily the
source of the leak. This is where thermography can help both indoor
and outdoor environments by often pin-pointing the exact source of
the leak. Thermal cameras can be used to ‘plot’ actual underfloor
heating routes prior to stud wall installations. If required the use of
drones can help with issues on District Heating Schemes.

UNDERFLOOR HEATING SURVEYS
Excess moisture within the fabric of the building can lead to damaged
insulation, heat loss through thermal bridging, and an increase
chance of damp and mould causing health issues. Ensuring a building
has adequate moisture controls is vital for managing heat loss.
However due to the challenging nature of moisture ingress it can be a
tricky task to trace the source. By using thermal imaging, we can
accurately detect thermal signatures associated with ingress enabling
us to accurately measure the anomalies. This non-destructive test of
the building envelope allows us to identify the heat loss and indicate
areas which are at risk. Not all mould is caused by moisture ingress,
thermal surveys can identify cold air pathways which can also cause
mould to develop on cold internal surfaces due to warm damp air
condensing.
